The Treatment of Cancer Pain with Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy System Ben Ren M.D.Ph.D, Tiangui Ding M.D, Chuiping Chen M.D, lijie Yin M.D, Zhaoxiang Peng M.D Dalian Gamma Knife Center, Dalian Central Hospital, 116033 Dalian, China From Sept to Nov of 2000, we had treated 48 patients with cancer pain with a Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy System. The age of patient was 37 to 86, while mean age was 67.5. The time of pain lasted 3 weeks to 6 months. All of patients had different medicine. The numbers of treatment times were 3 to 8 according to the tumor size and patient's condition. Fractional dosages were 400 to 800 cGy. Total dosages were 1200 to 4000 cGy. VRS pain rating scales and the palliation criterion were used for pain assessment and palliation criterion. A 91.7% success rate in providing pain relief is reported. Among of there patients there are 14 lung cancer sufferers, 10 adenocarcinoma of pancreas, 10 rectal adenocarcinoma, 3 liver cancer, 3 carcinoma of kidney and 8 bone metastases separately. After treatment 12, 8, 10, 3, 3 and 8 got pain relief, or cure. The relief was noted in some patients within 12 hours of the first treatment. The radiation dosage and tumor type appear to influence response, for instance bone metastases pain can be relief and cure within very short time, but adenocarcinoma of pancreas need more longer. The main mechanisms of action are tumor shrinkage, inhibition of release of chemical medical mediators of inflammation, and inhibition of receptor and conduction of never ending. |
